Book of Lists celebrated at a house that tops any list.

Money has never been a major motivator for me. In fact, no one who has ever worked in academia could claim to be motivated by money. The profession of law drew me more for its intellectual challenges, than for its capacity to increase my bank account.

But last Friday, I certainly had an opportunity to consider the advantages that the successful pursuit of money offers, as I attended a multiple author book signing located at  Marquis Las Vegas.

The event was the celebration of the release of the Las Vegas Business Press's Book of Lists 09.  This is the publication that lists Las Vegas businesses in assorted categories.  And yes, KKBRF is firmly ensconced on the law firm  list.

However, in addition to copies of that title, assorted Stephens Press authors were present, including Steven Kalas, signing his book, Human Matters,  Heidi Knapp Rinella, author of Personal Favorites, The Chefs of Las Vegas, Geoff Schumacher, signing both Howard Hughes, Power, Paranoia and Palace Intrigue, and Sun, Sin and Suburbia.

I’m told that John L. Smith was also present, along with my hostess, Stephens Press President, Carolyn Uber Hayes. However, I never found them, and that was likely because I was too busy oohing and ahing over the fabulous location.

My personal experience with multiple author book signings consists of a few tables thrown together, with the authors crowding each other for space. Stephens Press does things a bit differently. They spread their five or so authors out across some 10,000 square feet of a gorgeous, green-built model home.

I had been feeling pretty great about my pending purchase of a mid century modern home in the vintage Vegas neighborhood of Paradise Palms. But after seeing that place, with its infinity pool, multitude of gas firepits, and four stories with an elevator luxury, I can’t help at least a twinge of wistful desire for a larger housing budget.

My photo credit

I have a photo credit in a book.

This fits into the “here’s something I never thought I’d do” category. After all, I’m not exactly known for my photography.  Or my visual sense.

But yet, it is a true. A photo I took is in a actual book.   Caution Funny Signs Ahead.

The book is a collection of funny signs that ordinary people, including me, happened to see while driving along somewhere.  The humor of the signs is aided by commentary that I did not write. The people who did write the captions, and compile the photos, are Megan Edwards and Mark Sedenquist, who publish the websites RoadTrip America and Living Las Vegas.

My photo is of a sign in Leicestershire UK that says “Humped Zebra Crossing.”  In England, a zebra crossing is a crosswalk painted with white stripes – and a humped one means that the crosswalk is painted over a sort of very wide speed bump.    My husband and thought the sign was funny and I snapped a photo of it. (We also thought "Badger crossing" was funny, but apparently, that's just us.)

My payment was two copies of the book and the glory – which suits me fine. It is a very funny book, and I am proud to have had a small part in it.

I recommend it as a gift for all your friends who like to laugh. (If you have friends who don’t like to laugh, get new friends.)

Updates on the way

Due to a collision of my various worlds, I've fallen behind in reporting on last week's appellate opinions.  But updates are on the way!
